Government is to establish 17 health centers at various hospitals across the country to promote traditional medical services.
A pilot facility has already been set-up at Teshie Fertility Clinic in the Greater Accra Region, while the rest are expected to be rolled out by the second quarter of this year.
Deputy Minister of Health, Rojo Mattel-Nunoo says the centers would be manned by certified and registered traditional medicine practitioners and regulated by the Ministry and the Traditional Medicine Council.
Mr. Mettle-Nunoo said intensive public education would be carried out to enable the public to make informed choices on seeking medical care.
He was addressing members of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Association (GAFTRAM) in Kumasi.
He stated that “every region will have one, some regions will have two. We have been trying now to buy some of the fittings like tables, chairs, and identifying the particular areas where they will be put and others. The essential drugs list for traditional medicine has been developed”.
Mr. Mettle-Nunoo said the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders are set to hold discussion with the Food and Drugs Board on what he describes as ‘unbending fracas’ between the board and practitioners.
Meanwhile, a scheduled National Conference of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Association (GAFTRAM) in Kumasi was aborted following a court injunction.
A member of the Federation, Nana Adjei Frimpong, filed a writ to restrain the leadership from going ahead with the conference because the term of the executives convening the meeting had expired.
