The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that the government will inject GH₵1 billion from the GETFund in 2026 to address long-standing infrastructure challenges in schools nationwide.
The intervention, he explained, is central to efforts aimed at eliminating the double-track system in senior high schools.
“This investment will enable us to deal decisively with the infrastructure gap and, in doing so, help phase out the double-track system,” Mr Iddrisu said during a working tour of the Upper East Region.
He visited Zebilla Senior High Technical School, where he interacted with WASSCE candidates and assessed the impact of the protracted Bawku conflict on education in the area.
Encouraging students to stay committed to their studies, he emphasised that peace is critical for learning.
“We need to say no to war, no to conflict. Education remains our surest bet to fight ignorance and poverty, so seize the opportunity and give it your best,” he urged.
Appealing for calm in Bawku, the Minister underscored the urgency of restoring lasting peace to rebuild the city and create a stable learning environment.
He further noted the unfair disadvantage faced by students in conflict-affected areas.
“Unfortunately, examiners will not consider the fact that students here lacked serenity and peace of mind to study, yet they will be assessed equally with their counterparts in peaceful areas,” he lamented.
