The government paid more than GH¢10 billion in arrears to road contractors across the country by the end of December 2025, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza has revealed.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, Mr Agbodza described the disbursement as unprecedented in Ghana’s recent history.
“On record, by 31st December 2025, the amount of money paid as arrears to road contractors has never been paid within one period. We are approaching GH¢10 billion, and all the money paid towards these projects was awarded within the last eight years before President Mahama took office,” he said.
“Where in our history can we say that, between the space of two/three months, a government paid close to GH¢10 billion of arrears to contractors?” he asked.
The minister noted that prompt settlement of arrears is critical to ensuring the smooth execution of ongoing and future road projects, as it enables contractors to mobilise resources and work efficiently.
Touching on the Eastern Corridor Road, Mr Agbodza announced that the entire stretch is expected to be completed by December 2027, as the government moves to finish outstanding sections of what he described as one of Ghana’s longest single road networks.
