Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has resumed water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant following the successful replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.

The maintenance exercise began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as part of efforts to address weaknesses in the ageing transmission infrastructure serving parts of the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

GWL said water supply will, however, not return to normal immediately, as transmission lines and reservoirs need to be progressively refilled before operating pressures can be fully restored.

“The restoration of supply will be progressive as the transmission lines and reservoirs are filled and operating pressures are gradually rebuilt. Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilizes,” the company said in a statement issued on Monday, August 10.

GWL cautioned consumers against interpreting the resumption of production as an immediate return to continuous water supply.

The company's existing water demand management and rationing programme remains in effect to ensure that available water is distributed equitably while the network stabilises.

Customers in affected communities have therefore been advised to continue observing their usual rationing schedules.

The company said the transmission network is being closely monitored as supply is progressively restored.

Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, who personally inspected the works at various stages, commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance teams and technical personnel involved in the exercise.

He praised them for completing the assignment on schedule despite technical and operational challenges encountered during the maintenance.

Mr Mutawakilu particularly acknowledged the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams.

“The successful completion of the works demonstrated the value of teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination and committed leadership in addressing critical infrastructure challenges,” he said.

The GWL Managing Director also expressed appreciation to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, for supporting the maintenance exercise.

He said ECG's technical team worked closely with GWL personnel, including through the night, to address critical electrical and operational requirements and facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.

The company also acknowledged support from the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel and other stakeholders.

GWL said the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines remain a critical part of the water supply network serving communities in parts of the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

It urged customers to remain patient as the network is recharged, reservoirs are replenished, and pressures are gradually restored.

The company assured consumers that the transmission line would continue to be closely monitored as supply returns progressively.
