For the first time in several years, Ghanaian Muslims embarking on the annual pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca are full of commendation for the organizers.
The first batch of 260 pilgrims from the Ashanti region arrived at the Hajj Village in Accra on Monday full of praise for the organizers for getting their act right this time round.
In years past they have been crammed up at the Airport or the Elwak stadium, left to endure the vagaries of the weather and without basic bedding and toilet facilities.
This year’s Hajj Village, commissioned a week ago by the Vice President, however, provides comfortable accommodation and entertainment.
Interacting with Joy News, some of the would be pilgrims spoke of their joys.
“I am so happy to see that the Muslims have organised the thing well; our people are not sleeping on the street,” an excited woman said.
“I am so impressed; I feel like I am already in [Mecca],” another woman at the Hajj Village told our reporters.
A major difficulty organizers have had to deal with in times past, however, has been flight arrangements but the Chairman of the Hajj Committee, Alhaji Alhassan Bella says that has also been sorted out.
The first batch of pilgrims will depart the Kotoka International Airport Tuesday afternoon for Mecca.
