The Haven of Love Children’s Foundation, an NGO operating in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region has employed three teenage mothers to produce facemasks which have been distributed to vulnerable people in the area to help protect them from the coronavirus.
The teenagers who dropped out of school after getting pregnant, are currently being supported by the foundation to do some apprenticeship in dressmaking.
Haven of Love Children's Foundation is a non-denominational Christian Organization with a primary goal to create a conducive environment for disadvantaged children in vulnerable and marginalized communities.
Therefore, as the cases of Covid-19 continue to increase in the country, the foundation decided to join the fight against the spread of the virus in its operational area.
“We started by educating the people in small groups at a time in the remote and rural areas on the facts of the coronavirus as well as the various health protocols prescribed by the WHO and the Ghana Health Service for everybody to adhere to stop the spread”, said Richard Asitanga, the Program's Director for Haven of Love Children's Foundation.
He said the teenage mothers were tasked to produce 1, 000 facemasks as a way of motivating them to focus on completing their apprenticeship and also to make them feel the joy of contributing meaningfully to their community.
“These are girls who almost gave up on themselves so we are trying to push them to continue believing in themselves and what they can do for society”, Asitanga said, adding that the foundation rewarded the girls with some tokens for their effort.
The facemasks have been distributed to vulnerable people in the Bawku West district, who otherwise could not have afforded facemasks; to protect themselves from Covid-19.
One of the girls, Madina Mbabe, now 19 years old, said she feels “rescued” by the Haven of Love Children's Foundation.
“I don’t know what would have become of us, if Haven of Love had not come to help us start learning this trade”, Madina told Myjoyonline.com.
In addition to the education, the Haven of Love Children's Foundation has also mounted a total of 33 veronica buckets at vantage points and provided liquid soap for handwashing.
At least 500 hand sanitizers have also been made available.
In all, eight communities and a total 1, 500 people were reached by the foundation.
The communities are Argaago, Teshie, Soogo, and Anpaliga. The rest were Yarigu, Kansoogo, Kubuogo and Kokooi.
The Programs Director of Haven of Love Children's Foundation says individuals and institutions who wish to support their work, can reach out to them, through the Social Welfare office at the Bawku West District Assembly.
“The District Assembly is ware of our work and they support what we do but you also email us via; havenoflovefoundation@gmail.com”, he said.
