District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Afram Plains in the Ashanti Region has appealed to the Inspector General Police (IGP) to resource the police in the area to prevent attacks between nomadic herdsmen and locals from escalating further.
The DCE, Donkor Fuseini, who condemned the reprisal attacks which led to the death of two people on Tuesday afternoon while urging security agencies to ensure the protection of lives.
Reports say angry residents of Afirisere in the Agogo Central District shot an 80-year old Fulani man in reaction to the shooting a 25-year-old farmer by a suspected herdsman.
There are fears of further attacks at Akokonintare, a Fulani-dominated community in the Drobonso area as the police-military team move to the area.
Fuseini who is currently at the ongoing National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) conference in Sunyani in the Bong Ahafo Region says police in the district are insufficiently resourced with the required logistics to combat such situations.
Though the Assembly is funding the construction of quarters, motorbikes, among others for seven police officers in the district, same cannot be said of weapons and other logistics.
There is no official police vehicle as well as weaponry for the police. Police officers at Kumawu are faced with the task of travelling about 40 kilometers away to Drobonso, the district capital of the Sekyere Afram to embark on patrols.
“The Assembly cannot buy weapons for the police so we just appeal to the IGP at least even if it’s three in the police station; 3 could be okay. And the vehicle if it is ready, they should release it for us and at least, they should double the number of weapons for us”. Mr. Donkor has appealed.

Meanwhile, Fuseini has described yesterday’s attacks as disgusting and unwarranted. Speaking from the venue of the ongoing NALAG conference in Sunyani he tells Nhyira FM he’s devastated by the attacks.
“I am in a conference now but I can’t even concentrate. How can that be? Since when did we start shooting at human beings for no apparent reasons? I feel very disgusted. So what was the essence of going for the reprisal attack when we don’t actually know the source of fire”? Mr. Donkor quizzed.
A joint police-military team from the Operation Cowleg team has been dispatched to the area to maintain peace and order amid fear of attacks on the Fulani-dominated community.
