Acting Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Electoral Commission has expressed worry over the high level of mistrust among electoral stakeholders in the country.
Alexander Poku-Akutia at a press briefing on Friday said the current agitations could undermine the management and credibility of the 2020 elections.
“The high level of mistrust in the country now is unprecedented. The mistrust of the EC by some stakeholders the mistrust between political parties among others.
“These are very serious threats that can undermine the effective management of the 2020 elections,” he stated.
Mr Poku-Akutia also cautioned the media to desist from disseminating misinformation.
He said this can heighten agitations and cause an unforeseen chaos in the country.
After the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission asked Parliament to approve ¢444,846,663 to enable it to compile a new voters’ register, some opposition parties sternly kicked against it.
The opposition National Democratic Congress then turned to the Supreme Court asking that it stops the EC from compiling the register or allow the use of the birth certificate and voters ID card by prospective voters as proof of identification.
But, in a unanimous decision, the apex court ruled that the Electoral Commission could go ahead with the registration exercise and granted that the EC excludes the birth certificate and voters ID card as proof of identity.
The opposition although disappointed in the Court’s decision has urged citizens to participate in the upcoming exercise.
It also accused the Commission of allowing itself to be used by government to implement a diabolic agenda.
This and many turns of events are what Mr Poku-Akutia has observed that it could destablise the effectiveness of the EC come December 2020.
He however assured the public that the EC will deliver an election with incontrovertible results by ensuring free and fair elections.
