Some People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHAS) in the Eastern region, have stopped taking the anti-retroviral drugs because they could not feed themselves.
Madam Golda Asante, Eastern regional Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, disclosed this at a two-day consultative workshop in Ho in preparation towards the 2009 annual programme of the Ghana AIDS Commission.
She said PLWHAS were initially doing well, but their situation got worse after deciding not to take the drugs.
She also added that people assigned to monitor the taking of the drugs have stopped working because they were not motivated and called on stakeholders to help remedy the situation.
Madam Asante said the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the region dropped from 6 per cent in 2006 to 4.2 at present.
She said efforts were underway to ensure that the region became the least HIV/AIDS prevalent region in the country and urged individuals and organisations to support any such programmes.
