Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says he feels bad about the growing political intolerance between the incumbent government and opposition parties in Ghana.
He said the rate at which politicians were attacking each other using foul language particularly in the media, was totally unacceptable and therefore called for a cease fire to build a united Ghana.
“Though I subscribe to multiparty opposition in our country: I equally think all inclusive governance is the best practice for governing Ghana today,” he emphasized.
Ex-President Kufuor made the comments during an exclusive interview with Citi News Correspondent Abdul Karim Naatogmah at the country side Pumba Lodge in Grahams Town, South Africa.
He maintained that the four years period for every Ghanaian leader was not enough and reiterated his earlier call for a constitutional amendment to make it five years.
This, Mr. Kufuor noted will give subsequent governments enough time to accomplish their development agenda if giving two consecutive terms to rule by the Ghanaian electorate.
He said the first three years of his Presidency was used to rehabilitate Ghana’s fragile economy which he inherited from his predecessor.
Answering a question as to why he reversed the NDC's vision 2020 to vision 2015, Mr Kufuor said that he was convinced after assuming office that he could use four years to complete his agenda which he anticipated would have salvaged Ghana’s economy better than the 19 years rule of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Touching on his office accommodation saga, the ex-president said a two bed room accommodation has been allocated at Cantonments for that purpose but added that he was using his pocket money to pay his staff.
The Former President is South Africa as a Guest of Honor for the 14th Africa Highway conference in Rhodes University, Grahamstown.
The conference is the largest gathering of African journalists and has become a centre of deliberation on the way forward for journalism, the media and information communication technology in Africa.
