The third accused in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial, Richard Jakpa, has testified that he met with Attorney-General Godfred Dame to urge him to stop abusing his powers capriciously against innocent Ghanaians.
Mr Jakpa made this claim during court proceedings on Thursday, June 20, offering an explanation for their controversial meeting.
The businessman stated that his intention in meeting with the Attorney-General was to address concerns about what he perceived as the arbitrary and unjust use of prosecutorial powers.
He expressed his belief that many innocent Ghanaians were being unfairly targeted and hoped to persuade Dame to adopt a more equitable approach.
According to Mr Jakpa, the meeting took place at the residence of Supreme Court Judge Justice Yonny Kulendi, who is his cousin.
He explained that the Attorney-General felt comfortable discussing the matter in this familiar setting, which facilitated their communication.
During cross-examination by Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, Mr Jakpa reiterated his concerns about the misuse of power and defended his decision to seek a meeting with Dame.
He also addressed allegations that WhatsApp messages submitted as evidence had been tampered with, claiming that the content was altered to misrepresent his communications.
The court had earlier admitted 68 WhatsApp messages exchanged between Jakpa and the Attorney-General, with the presiding judge, Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, noting that the court reserves the right to determine the weight of this evidence.
