The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to adopt a reconciliatory and inclusive posture following his victory in the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
The former Vice President said he is ready to work with all members, including those who openly opposed or criticised him.
Engaging party supporters and executives at his residence in Tse Addo, Accra, on Monday, January 2, Dr Bawumia said unity within the NPP remains the most critical factor in the party’s bid to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
“Fundamentally, if you solve that internal problem, you are on your way to victory. If 2.1 million people had voted, we would have won.
"I am going to be very open-minded, open-hearted and open-armed to everybody, even those who were insulting me,” he said.
The former Vice President, who won the primaries with 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast, noted that his immediate priority is to strengthen the party nationwide and heal divisions that may have arisen during the contest.
Since the declaration of results, Dr Bawumia’s residence has witnessed a steady stream of visitors, including national and regional party executives, supporters and some of his former rivals in the race, among them Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who have paid courtesy calls and pledged their support.
Reflecting on his performance in the primaries, Dr Bawumia expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing it as an improvement on his previous showing and a positive signal for the party’s future.
“I am happier about this result than I was in 2023. If you look at the data qualitatively, this is a superior result. We won more constituencies than we did last time,” he stated.
The NPP presidential primaries, held on January 31, 2026, saw Dr Bawumia defeat four other aspirants, with Kennedy Agyapong placing second at 23.76 per cent, followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong at 18.53 per cent, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum at 1.02 per cent, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong at 0.21 per cent.
