Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has disclosed that there has been an attempt to blow up a bridge at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
This is the first time this is happening in the history of decade-long conflict in the region.
According to Interior Minister, this happened on Sunday.
“For the first time, Mr Speaker, three days ago, improvised explosive device was used to try to blow a bridge. Don’t let us joke with Bawku,” he said.
He made this revelation while arguing on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, on how the situation in Bawku can be handled to prevent further escalation.
He noted that if the situation is not stopped immediately, “we risk a situation where Ghana can be thrown under terrorist attacks.”
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM's Top Story the Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga corroborated the Minister’s account.
According to him, the issue was brought to his attention, adding that he would investigate the matter.
He noted that he is not certain if it was the Bawku youth who carried out this act or not.
“Yes, I have been talking to the military command... I met Northern Command in Tamale and they did mention this explosion thing to me, “ he said.
He added that he was briefed that “the youth wanted to blow the bridge because that was the bridge the armed forces use with the armour cars to come and harass them.”
The Bawku Central MP said if indeed the attempted destruction of the bridge happened, then it is most unfortunate.
This, according to him, is the reason he is fighting for justice to prevail in the situation. He added that “if the youth feel that nobody is going to be held accountable for what happened, then you are easily pushing them to do what they ought not to do.”
