Industries have been asked to use only qualified electricians in wiring their properties.
Expertly wired installations would significantly help reduce their production cost and also secure their properties, the Energy Commission has explained.
Speaking with Joy Business at a ceremony to certify 800 electrical wiring officers, Principal Programme Officer at the Technical Regulations Department of the Commission, Solomon Sarpong said if an installation is not done by a qualified electrician, “the ‘reactive power’ which is not useful like the ‘active power’ will be wasted albeit at a cost to the business hence, the need to have the job done by only those well trained to do it.”
Mr. Sarpong’s comments follow the implementation of the electrical wiring regulation 2011 (LI 2008) which requires that wiring of properties is done only by only qualified and certified electricians and that they use only authentic materials.

To this end, the Commission has so far trained and certified about Two Thousand Five Hundred (2,500) electricians across the country to enforce the law.
The Commission, however, is rolling out a gradual enforcement programme and hope to have the entire country covered by the end of 2016 after which any property without a professional wiring seal will not be connected to the national grid.
The Commission is also confident the country would be able to save substantial amounts of energy with the policy as the country grapples with energy shortfall. The Commission explained that power from the national grid to either domestic or commercial properties are to a large extent lost to poor electrical wiring thereby contributing to the current challenge the country is faced with.
