Dr. Tony Aidoo, the Director of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the Presidency, has attacked critics condemning President John Mahama for engaging in what they have called sectarian politics ahead of the December polls.
A group within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) called the Young Members has raised concerns that the president’s current tour of the three northern regions is part of a tribalistic campaign.
Samuel Abu Jinapor, the group’s convener, said at a press conference in Kumasi that President Mahama told the people in the north to vote for him as one of their own so that a Northerner might finally take the Presidency.
Abu Jinapor fears that if presidential aspirants base their campaigns on tribal lines, resulting ethnic conflicts could be detrimental to the country’s growing democracy.
But speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen Monday, Dr. Tony Aidoo accused the NPP of being hypocritical and living by a double standard.
He charged that the opposition party is the worst culprit when it comes to tribal and religious politics. At a Mantse Agbonaa rally, he contended, NPP vice presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia called on Ghanaians to consider a Muslim northerner vice president than a Christian.
“The same Bawumia has been playing tribal politics ever since he hit the scene, trying to mobilize northern votes on the basis of his own religion” he said.
By contrast, Dr. Tony Aidoo maintained that the president did nothing wrong in appealing to his kinsmen in the north to vote for him. “What President Mahama said makes logical sense. If you can have a full blooded northern president, why go in for a half baked messenger vice president?”
