WaterAid Ghana has called on government to invest in ways to ensure that all households and families have access to safe water resources as the country fights against the coronavirus pandemic.
As recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), frequent handwashing with soap and water is one of the best preventive measures in fighting infectious disease.
However, with a lack of clean water close to people’s homes or lack of places to wash one’s hands, WaterAid is concerned about the risks such communities face ahead.
According to WaterAid, about 14% of Ghanaians use water from unsafe sources, 22% defecate in the open and 28% do not have facilities to practice basic hygiene such as handwashing with soap under running water. (MICS 2017/ 18)
They issued the statement on Sunday in celebration of World Water Day, WaterAid charging government to heed to WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros’ advice that is now the time “for all countries to invest in preparedness and not panic”.
