Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on behalf of his colleague MPs, has rendered an apology to the general public for the chaos during the vote for a new Speaker and swearing-in of newly elected Parliamentarians.
The exercise, which occurred on January 7, 2021, had the opposition factions in the House clashing; thus prompting a military intervention.
The MPs were voting to choose the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic. The contest was between former Speaker, Aaron Mike Oquaye and current Speaker, Alban Bagbin. But chaos erupted when a lawmaker from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) tried to snatch the ballot box.
Although leaders of the House have on various platforms apologized, the event continues to be highly criticised by the general public.
Speaking at a press brief, Wednesday, May 31, 2021, the Suame MP rendered a thorough apology to the general public over the event. He expressed remorse, stating that the behaviour of the MPs "certainly cannot be applauded."
"Why should we be so antagonistic to ourselves to the extent that the members are applying force to disrupt the conduct of elections, on several occasions culminating in one person snatching a ballot box. It was such a shameful day not only for the Parliament of Ghana but indeed for the entire country.
"If we have to apologise to the whole nation for that, we have to do that in order to pinch ourselves that it should never happen again," he said.
