As the world celebrates Mother’s Day on May 14, 2023, Joy FM sets its radar on mothers raising children with special needs.
Motherhood, a task that requires a lot of sacrifices, gets even more hectic when the children have various forms of impairments.
Sophia Asamoah, a mother who finds herself in this situation, shared her story on Joy FM's Drive Time with Lexis Bill on Monday, May 8, 2023. She has three autistic children.
According to her, she went through a lot of stress raising the children. Speaking about how she felt when her first child came out with autism, she explained how it halted a lot of her normal life activities.
“I had to spend more time with him, so suddenly the whole thing of trying to finish my professional exam I wasn’t even interested anymore. It was all about getting Goodman [my son] to call me mummy,” she told Lexis Bill.
She said she was so worried that her son could not talk. She had exhausted all means of therapy but to no avail.
Sophia said when her second and third children also turned out to be autistic she said to herself God could not have made a mistake.
“No, God will not make a mistake. Autism: Goodman, Newman, Adom. God will surely not make a mistake and if he will do his thing he will do it. A miracle will happen if it will happen, along the line,” she said.
She also mentioned investigations into her family and her husband’s proved that they both had no family history of autism.
Sophia, who had always believed in the word of God and reposed her trust in Him, finally had her fourth child who came with no impairments.
Her three autistic children, Goodman, Newman and Adom are currently 17, 16 and 14 years old respectively.
This year on Mother’s Day, Joy FM, through My Super Mom Promo, will be throwing its spotlight on ten (10) mothers who have children with special needs.
The mothers who are raising children with special needs were asked to send stories of their struggles in fending for their children to Joy FM.
As part of feting these moms for their selflessness on Mother’s Day, Joy FM, through its sponsors and partners, will present some items to them.
My Super Mom Promo is sponsored by Fortune Rice, Frytol Sunflower Oil, Zigzag Fashion Accessories, Woodin and Lesh Fortune Limited, Sonotech Ghana, Labadi Beach Hotel and Caveman Watches.
