The Head of Operations at the Ghana National Petroleum Authority (GNPC), Mr Thomas Manu, has given the strongest indication yet that the corporation is going to acquire Kosmos’ stake in the Jubilee fields regardless of various media reports linking ExxonMobil to the deal.
Mr Manu faults Kosmos for disclosing confidential data to ExxonMobil and others without the consent of GNPC.
The Jubilee Fields in the offshore area of the Tano Basin is fast becoming the focus of a wrangle for a stake in Ghana’s oil find.
This follows the decision of Kosmos Energy, a 23.5% stakeholder in the consortium that discovered the crude oil, to offload its interest.
Kosmos is said to have agreed to sell its stake to global energy giant ExxonMobil for some $4 billion.
Government, represented by the GNPC would however have none of that, claiming that as a partner, it reserved the first option to buy Kosmos’ stake.
“We are still pursuing our objective of acquiring the Kosmos interest,” Mr Manu told Joy Business Editor Fred Avornu.
Meanwhile, the British Petroleum has also expressed interests in the stake with BP representatives said to have arrived in Ghana to demonstrate how serious they are.
