Authorities at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi are threatening a possible closure of their emergency unit and other wards due to what officials describe as “excessive overcrowding.”Authorities say the number of patients in certain facilities exceeds the maximum capacity that those wards can accommodate. There are currently over two hundred patients in the emergency wards in spite of the fact that the hospital’s twelve-patients-per-ward limit. An investigation by Nhyira News revealed that some patients on admission are currently sleeping on students’ mattresses on the floors while others are being turned away due a lack of available beds.As a result, KATH Public Relations Officer Kwame Frimpong says the situation is greatly affecting the smooth administration of quality healthcare delivery and interrupting the day-to-day activities of the hospital.Mr. Frimpong believes that only the immediate expansion of the facilities and the establishment of a regional hospital can save the situation. Some patients who spoke to Nhyira News expressed their frustration about the situation.
