The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, says it wasn’t a ‘straightforward’ decision to keep Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach.
Addo had come under strong criticism for the team’s performances and the Black Stars failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) didn’t do him any good.
However, the Executive Council members of the Ghana FA, in the end, decided the former Ghana international should stay at post.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum revealed the ExCo members were unsure about keeping the 49-year-old.
“It was a very tensed atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team. Not all of them said yes. It was very very difficult,” he said.
“I sat there for hours and still, it got to the point where there was a stalemate so the meeting had to be adjourned and for them to reconvene again so it was tough.
“It was not just a straightforward decision that after hearing from him or listening to him, we want to say yes or we are all saying yes to his continuous stay in office or otherwise. It was very tough. The end product is that he will stay based on the council’s stay. But the factors that led to the decision was very very tough.”
Addo will want to prove doubters wrong when the team assembles again in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
