Ken Ashigbey, convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has called for an independent investigation into the Obuasi clash that resulted in the deaths of at least seven people.
He emphasised the need for an independent inquiry to uncover the true masterminds behind the disturbances and assess the full extent of the damage caused as well as punish the culprits to serve as a deterrent.
He said, "We believe that an independent investigation is necessary to hear both sides of the story—whether they involve illegal activities or not—and to also hear the military's side."
Mr Ashigbey continued, "We need to know the truth to ensure that the right actions are taken and that the appropriate punishment is meted out to whoever is responsible.
"Because we are building a country based on the rule of law, it is essential that the law is upheld, regardless of who is involved. The facts must be properly established."
The seven people lost their lives over the weekend in Obuasi, a gold mining community in the Ashanti Region, following a clash between locals and military personnel stationed in the area to combat illegal mining.
The situation has also affected education in the area as both private and public schools have been temporarily closed.
In response, the President has ordered an investigation into the incident.
