The Kensei-Kai Foundation, in partnership with the W.K.M Karate Association, has officially launched the High School Karate Project in Wa, targeting youth development through martial arts education. 

The initiative, unveiled in May 2025, is aimed at introducing structured karate training and value-based leadership development to students in selected senior high schools within the Wa Municipality.

With support from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other regional stakeholders, the project seeks to address growing concerns over discipline, inactivity, and character development among school-aged youth. 

Karate was selected for its emphasis on respect, self-control, perseverance, and non-violence—principles that organisers believe are crucial to holistic student growth.

The rollout began in March 2025 following months of consultations with key education, sports, and security authorities, including the GES, TVET Service, National Sports Authority, and the Ghana Police Service. 

Four schools - Wa Senior High, Jamiat Islamic Girls, Wa SecTech, and Naa Momori Technical Institute - are currently participating in the pilot phase.

Training sessions are held twice a week after school hours and follow the Japan Karate Association (JKA) syllabus. 

In addition to karate techniques, students are exposed to fitness drills, self-defense, martial arts history, and will soon benefit from modules on entrepreneurship and security awareness.

So far, over 87 students have enrolled, showing marked improvements in confidence, focus, and teamwork.

For organisers, the project is more than a sporting activity—it is a mission to empower a new generation of disciplined and responsible young leaders in Ghana’s Upper West Region.
