Four-time winner of the Songwriter of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), Martin King Arthur, aka Kofi Kinaata, has responded to critics to prove his writing prowess.
He said his recent award is a clear indication that he is a good songwriter, contrary to claims by some industry players who believe that he (Kinaata) is overrated.
One such person is veteran musician Rex Omar who excluded the ‘Things fall apart’ hitmaker from his top five songwriters claiming that he was not that good a writer.
Rex Omar in an interview on an Accra-based Zylophone FM station said that the Takoradi based artiste can be described as a good lyricist but not a good songwriter.
But speaking to JoyNews’ Ibrahim Ben Baako at the just ended Kinaata said, “I believe in myself, I know myself so this is for you people so you can believe that Kofi can write songs or Kofi has good contents.
"For me I know who I am, I know I can write but this is just for you people to believe that I can write."
Reacting to whether or not he expected to win the songwriter category for the fourth time, he said the award was a done deal because he puts in extra effort in the songs he releases.
Kofi Kinaata beat competition from Diana Hamilton, Adina, Joe Mettle, Abiana and Epixode to win the award with his song ‘Behind The Scenes’.
He added that the stress in promoting songs here in Ghana forces him to put together great pieces so his song can promote itself.
“Promotion in Ghana is very tough; a lot is involved, and so sometimes when I’m writing a song, I make sure I do stuff that wouldn’t be hard to promote, one that DJ’s would like to play and one that people call FM stations to request, so as to make the work easier,” he said.
“Sometimes you have to follow trend or say certain things before a song can hit. If you can’t do all that you have to make sure you do a good song” he said
He is the first artiste to win the award four times consecutively.
