Residents of Kparekpare in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region have resorted to drinking foul-smelling, muddy water because the only borehole which serves their water needs has broken down.

According to residents, they are left with no other option than to drink the contaminated water to quench their thirst.

Some women revealed pigs, cattle and other domesticated animals share the same water source with residents.

Women and children also have to travel long distances to get the water.

Chief of Kparekpare, Nana Owusu Attah III in an interview with Adom News said, the community has over the years been battling with water crisis.

He noted that the borehole broke down because both indigenes and residents in nearby towns all rely on it for water.

“Government must come to our aid now because we always suffer before we get water to drink” he said.

Nana Owusu Attah III indicated that, all attempts to get the district assembly and the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing to intervene in the situation has proven futile.

“I’m currently under pressure as a chief to provide water for my people, so government must come and help us out because the situation will be getting worse once we only depend on the dam,” Nana Owusu Attah III stressed.

Meanwhile,  the District Chief Executive for Krachi East, Peter Awurenyi  said he has received several complaints from the residents in the area over the water challenges but the assembly is doing all it can to get the community borehole.

He added that the assembly is currently working with some NGOs including Afram Plains Development Organization to construct a borehole for the community in a bid to avert possible water-borne diseases.

Peter Awurenyi assured the community that the assembly will provide the community with one borehole within a month.

“It’s a matter of concern to the assembly so we are putting measures in place to dig borehole for the people of Kparekpare within a month” the DCE assured the residents.
