The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti Region has criticised the government for failing to adequately resource the office of the Attorney General (AG) so it could effectively execute its mandate.
According to K. T Hammond despite frequent complaints from Members of the House to resource the AGs office, government has failed complied.
“I think the office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice is not seen as an infrastructural framework so somehow, the system doesn’t really measure the weight that it brings into the development of our democracy.
“But these institutions play important roles because when there is no peace in the country there won’t be any peaceful rest for anybody in this country,” he said when addressing the house on Thursday.
Mr Hammond divulged that out of the ¢135 million approved by the house in 2019, only ¢96 million has been disbursed and that is hampering the AGs effectiveness.
“Last year when we complained they were able to disburse only ¢96 million out of the ¢135 million allocation.
“What crime has the Attorney General’s office committed?” he lamented.
Also speaking on the matter, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu asked the House to ensure that at least one percent of the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) is dedicated to the AGs office.
“Mr Speaker, this Parliament must also stop the pretence, if we want to help the Attorney General we can and we should demonstrate it as a House,” he charged his fellow Parliamentarians.
