Traders at the Race Course Market in Kumasi have been demonstrating against the city authorities over their relocation arrangements. They have petitioned the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to prevail on the metropolitan assembly to offer a suitable place to ply their trade. The traders have been asked to vacate the Race Course area to pave way for the construction of the multi-million dollar Sun City project. The affected traders are however not pleased with the resettlement process.Thousands of them took to the streets of Kumasi to register their displeasure over their relocation to the Abinkyi market and later petitioned the Regional Minister.Executive Member of the Race Course Federation Market Association, Maxwell Ofori Addo, told Luv Biz Report majority of the traders cannot afford the Gh¢6,000.00 being charged for a stall at the Abinkyi market. They also complain the new market is not attractive for trading because of limited space to load and offload goods and well as the proximity of a high-tension electricity line passing through the area.Mr. Ofori Addo said the traders rather want the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to develop a facility around the Bekwai Roundabout to accommodate them. The group is expecting a favorable response from the Regional Coordinating Council. However, Metro Chief Executive Samuel Sarpong says the traders would have no option but to vacate the Race Course area.“Some people are just being mischievous, it’s as simple as that but we’ll not encourage that. Monday they’ll have to move, it’s as simple as that. Just a few individuals who are being mischievous because as at now, every necessary arrangement has been made so far as the relocation of these traders from the Race Course to Abinkyi is concerned so I don’t see the reason why they should demonstrate. We’ve engaged them in discussions and everything is under control”, the Mayor told Luv Biz Report.Story by Kofi Adu Domfeh/Luv Fm/Ghana
