The Local Government Ministry and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) say plans are far advanced to secure a 2.8 million euro facility to put up a more sophisticated dumping site at the current Lavender hill.

As part of the move, the ministry and some assemblies in the greater Accra region on Thursday, embarked on a tour aimed at putting an end to dumping at inappropriate locations.

Thousands of cholera cases were recorded last year mostly in the greater Accra region.

To prevent the shameful incident from repeating itself, the mayor of Accra says, the Assembly has stepped up efforts to close down lavender hill and replace it with a more sophisticated facility.

The local government minister Collins Dauda who led the delegation said, the issue of waste management must start with the citizenry since Government is unable to do it alone.

The team also toured the Kpone landfill site in Tema.

The facility which was originally designed to take five hundred tonnes is now taking about two thousand tonnes a day.

The TMA mayor has therefore warned of a looming danger. Ashai Odamtten however added that in the long term, the Assembly is planning to put the waste to good use by turning it into energy
