A Police Inspector stationed at the Monitors Unit of the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday stunned a packed Circuit Court in Accra when he pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to rob and robbery. Inspector Isaac Agbenyega Luguh was, however, saved from an early conviction and sentence, with the intervention of a lawyer, who told the court that the accused person looked confused from the dock and did not understand the implications of his plea. "My Lord, policemen are only brave when making arrests, but when they mount the dock they become confused," the lawyer, whose name could not immediately be verified, told the court. Based on this intercession, the presiding judge, Mr Eric Kyei Baffour, entered a plea of not guilty for the accused person and remanded him until September 16, 2011. Inspector Luguh was said to have conspired with a civilian accomplice to rob a trader of his taxi and GH¢6,000 among other items, before they abandoned him at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. The accomplice, Osei Tutu, alias Osei Wayo, described by the police as a suspected armed robber, is at large. The suspects on June 16, 2011 were said to have gone to the Days Inn Hotel at Tantra Hill, Achimota, where the complainant, a trader from Elubo in the Jomoro District in the Western Region, was lodging about at11:30 p.m. According to the facts of the case as narrated by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr P A. Dery, the complainant on the said day came to Accra with his KIA taxicab with registration number GE 7180-11 to transact business and lodged at the hotel. He said Inspector Luguh, armed with a pistol and a handcuff, together with Osei, went to the hotel and arrested the complainant for a purported offence. Mr Dery said during the arrest, the two accused persons robbed the complainant of GH¢6,000, a BlackBerry mobile phone, a Nokia mobile phone, a wristwatch, a bracelet and a necklace and also took away his car from him. "They handcuffed the complainant and took him to the Accra Regional Headquarters but later took him to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and abandoned him there," the prosecutor said. The complainant On August 8, 2011, lodged a complaint at the Accra Regional CID. In the course of investigations, Inspector Luguh was identified by the complainant and he was arrested.
