Leadership of Parliament is lamenting over how corruption has engulfed the election of parliamentary candidates by the various political parties in the country.
Monecracy has been predominant in primaries of the major parties here in Ghana, this according to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu seems to be breeding corruption in Ghana’s democracy.
“I keep saying what we’re doing in Ghana here does not exist anywhere in the world, the political parties must confront this issue at once” Kyei Mensah stressed.
“I believe we have to confront this reality because to be honest with myself, I cannot envisage what will happen to us the next two general elections after this one, I cannot and the path we’re beating for ourselves certainly is not the best, the two major parties NPP, NDC should bite the bullet and do serious introspection into the operations of their constitutions and proffer the necessary amendments” Kyei Mensah stated.
He noted that parties cannot carry on and act as though nothing is happening because it could threaten democracy and must be addressed.
“We all do know that what we’re doing is the genesis of corruption, we’re sowing the seeds of corruption, let nobody pretend that we don’t know what is happening, we should take a cue and work to improve the system."
Kyei Mensah also informed the house that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs is engaging the various political parties namely, NPP, NDC, CPP, PNC and among other parties all acknowledge that something needs to be done but none of the parties is ready to implement the reforms.
“I believe honestly it’s too late in the day now we have just 48 hours to go for the primaries it’s too late but there should be a serious efforts to reform the system otherwise it maybe disastrous for this nation” Kyei Mensah added.
He further wished all incumbent NPP MPs the best for the upcoming primaries on Saturday to elect their candidates for the 2020 elections.
Contributing to the discussions on the floor ahead of the NPP’s primaries on Saturday, the Minority Chief, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak said the growing practice in the country is very disappointing how aspirants use money to influence delegates’ votes.
He called on the two main political parties to come together to find a lasting solution to the phenomenon which he fears threatened the nations democracy.
The Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu on his part said incumbent MPs needs protection in the upcoming NPP primaries.
He also wished all the incumbent MPs well and called for prayers for them as the party elects their candidates on Saturday.
