The League of Concerned Christian Professionals has called on faith-based organisations to ask the Electoral Commission (EC) to halt the compilation of the new voters’ register.
Speaking at a press briefing in Tamale on Thursday, the Group’s Chair, Andrew Dokurugu said the EC’s decision to compile a new roll for the 2020 election could threaten Ghana's peace.
He noted that the new roll is a needless exercise since the Jean Mensa-led EC in 2019 stated that the register is credible and used it to conduct the district assembly elections.
“The current register that the EC is so desperately trying to discard is the one that brought the sitting president and this crop of Parliamentarians to office and the outcome of that election has never been contested,” he stated.
Touching on the duration for the 2020 election, Mr Dokurugu indicated that Ghanaians will be going to the polls in some five months, hence, it will be impossible to compile a credible register before December.

He further said, with the current coronavirus pandemic and its effects on citizens, it will be burdensome for electorates to travel to their hometowns to register.
He added that the exercise can possibly be venues to spread the virus that is still wrecking havoc across the world.
“This will expose the aged who have many underlying diseases and who are more vulnerable to the disease,” Mr Dokurugu added.
