Leicester City’s Joseph Dodoo has received his first call-up to the Ghana squad as the African country look to persuade him to switch his international allegiance from England, sources have told ESPN FC.
Dodoo, 20, has already been capped by England at under-18 level, but Ghana want him to play for the country of his birth and handed the youngster a call-up for the friendly against Guinea later this month and the crucial African Nations Cup qualifier with Mauritius in June.
The forward left Ghana to move to England at the age of eight and he was signed by Leicester’s academy when he was 13. Since then, he has come through the youth ranks at Leicester and made his breakthrough into the first-team this season in the Capital One Cup.
Dodoo scored a hat trick on his debut against Bury earlier this season and he has gone on to make three further appearances for the Foxes.
He made his Premier League debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in late August before joining Bury on a month’s loan.
Ghana scouts have been alerted to Dodoo’s potential and have been keeping tabs on his progress with the forward tipped for a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England U21 side.
