The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has disbursed GH¢23.6 million out of the GH¢25 million released by the Finance Ministry to settle allowances owed to assembly members.
Sector Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced this at a press briefing held at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra.
According to the Minister, the disbursement covers allowances for April and May 2025.
“The Ministry of Finance has released GH¢25 million on 18th June 2025 as the first tranche of the allocated funds to the Ministry for the payment of the allowances to the various assembly members throughout the country.
The Ministry, as of today, Monday, July 14, 2025, has transferred a total amount of GH¢23,621,000 representing allowances of April and May to all assembly members in the country”, he noted.
He further clarified that each assembly member is entitled to a monthly allowance of GH¢1,300, aimed at enabling them to effectively execute their duties under the government’s “resetting agenda.”
“Each assembly member is being paid GH¢1,300 per month to enable them to perform their duties efficiently and effectively. A total of 9,085 assembly members are benefiting from this objective.
"Clearly, the resetting agenda on local governance and decentralisation bodes well with the significant step of transferring resources to local government and assembly members”, he remarked.
The sector minister reaffirmed government’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of assembly members, emphasising that regular payment of allowances is key to empowering them to deliver on their mandates effectively.
