The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is worried about an acute shortage of drugs for the treatment of these diseases in Ghana.

According to the Fund, a bulk of these drugs have remained at the Tema Port since October 2023 awaiting clearance from the government.

A board member of Global Fund says the drugs are expiring at the habour.

This means the ones in circulation face a shortage if nothing is done about the situation.

Officials of the Global Fund have arrived in Ghana to investigate the source of the problem.

"The Global Fund has supported Ghana and they are still there at the ports. About 300 commodities for TB, HIV and malaria [are locked at the ports] because there is no money to clear them," one of them told JoyNews.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry is expected to meet the Fund over the situation.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is an international financing and partnership organisation that aims to "attract, leverage and invest additional resources to end these epidemics."
