The National U-17 Womens football team the Black Maidens made history by qualifying to the semi-final stage of the ongoing World Cup with a crucial 1-0 victory over Japan.
A 53rd minute goal by S Sumaila proved priceless for a side that was hugely underrated in the competition.
The Japanese had the better of the possession throughout the game but the Maidens were resilient in defence and kept the Japanese attack at bay.
Having scored 17 goals and conceded none in the competition, Japan were the overwhelming favourites to book a semi-final berth but the Maidens were determined, their tackles were timely and when it mattered most, Sumaila stepped-up and whipped a shot which passed through the legs of the Japanese goal keeper for the only goal of the game.
Ghana’s goal keeper made a superb last gasp save on the stroke of additional time to keep the Maidens hope alive.
The Maidens play France in the semis.
