Government wants the head of the Mamprugu kingdom to lead a campaign to solve all the chieftaincy conflicts in the three regions in the northern part of the country.

Interior Minister Mark Woyongo says Nayiri Mahami Sheriga must be particularly interested in ensuring the right people are installed chiefs in the three regions.

The Interior Minister and Regional Ministers from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions were in Nalerigu to meet the Nayiri before they continued to Bunkpurugu Yunyoo where two people were killed in an ethnic conflict.

Mark Woyongo who briefed the media before the meeting appealed to the chiefs in the three northern regions to “streamline the succession plan to make sure only qualified people become chiefs”.

He observed: “The chieftaincy institution is supposed to be a noble institution, the chieftaincy institution is supposed to galvanize the people for development, the chieftaincy institution is supposed to be a blessing, but regrettably, it’s becoming a curse because in the process, a lot of people are dying needlessly. Innocent people are being killed and I think that we need to sit up.”

The Minister was convinced a well-thought succession plan would be the surest way to curtail chieftaincy disputes in the area.

Mark Woyongo says conflicts in the area as a result of the chieftaincy disputes have stalled development there as nobody wants to invest in the area.

“The people should cultivate the culture of tolerance, culture of dialogue, culture of sitting down as brothers and sisters to discuss their problem and arriving at a mutually satisfactory agreement.”
