A 19-year-old man suffered multiple machete wounds after he was attacked for allegedly ripping off the campaign posters of a rival candidate in the upcoming District Assembly Elections in the Tema New Town community.

The victim, Benjamin Dika, a factory hand, said to be a sympathiser of the incumbent assemblyman for the Homowo Electoral Area, Christian Yaw Amoah was taken to hospital after he was reportedly attacked by one Kpanpanja, a supporter of a rival assembly member aspirant, with a machete.

The victim in an interview with journalists said he returned from town and realised a poster with the image of one Enoch Kotei Afutu, one of the aspiring candidates for the Homowo Electoral Area, had been pasted on his door.

He said he got angry and ripped the poster off.

He added that on October 1, 2019, the suspect who heard about it came to his house to warn him.

Apology

Mr Dika said he apologized and promised that such an incident will not repeat itself.

According to him just as he turned to lock his door, the suspect hit his head and arm with a machete and wounded him in the process.

Enoch Kotei Afutu on his part condemned the incident and said district assembly elections should be devoid of violence and expressed his readiness to meet his opponent for an amicable resolution and foster peace ahead of the elections in the community.

He added that at the end of the just-ended limited voters’ registration exercise; he facilitated the registration of the victim and his wife by transporting them to the registration centre and expressed surprise that his name will be associated with the said attack.

Security

The incumbent assemblyman for the area Christian Y. Amoah, who is seeking re-election condemned the said attacks and called on the security agencies to deploy security personnel to the community to defuse the tension there ahead of the District Level Elections, following threats on his life and that of his family.

Meanwhile, the Tema Fishing Harbour Police Station has commenced investigations into the case.
