A man in Texas has been charged with the capital murder of his girlfriend and their unborn baby girl after he allegedly told police that “rough sex” was the cause of the expectant mother’s death.

Paul Raymond Chandler, 20, was placed under arrest for the beating and strangulation of Kaycee Wofford, 19, according to the Wichita Falls Police Department.

An arrest warrant reviewed by Oxygen.com states Chandler called police shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday to report his “wife” was dead and “blue in the face.”

When responders arrived at the Deer Park Way home in Wichita Falls, they found Wofford on her back, lying next to an air mattress, according to the warrant written by Wichita Falls Detective Tanner Fowler. It was believed that Wofford, who was “obviously pregnant,” had been dead for several hours in the couple’s upstairs bedroom. The victim wore only a t-shirt and had blood coming from the corner of her mouth.

Det. Fowler stated there were signs of lividity indicative of the body being moved.

A postmortem examination at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences revealed that Wofford was 32-weeks pregnant with a daughter and that the otherwise-healthy unborn child was “only dead because the mother had died,” according to the affidavit. Wofford died of strangulation “both by her throat and by compression to her chest.”

Further examination showed the blood from the victim’s mouth stemmed from “her bottom lip being ripped away from the gums” and that there was bruising and trauma to her head, which in and of itself was not fatal but ”showed significant signs” to the medical examiner that the victim was beaten.

Chandler allegedly initially told detectives that he and Wofford went to bed at around 1:00 a.m. and that he found his girlfriend dead when he woke up hours later.

“Paul made statements that he didn’t know what happened to her, but he believed some unknown person may have climbed through their opened second-story window and done something to her,” according to Fowler.

Police also questioned the couple’s two roommates, sisters Christian and Elizabeth Rhodes, who lived in the home with one of the women’s 8-year-old daughters. During questioning, the women claimed Chandler and Wofford began arguing at around 10:00 p.m. and continued for about an hour, resulting in Chandler being “upset” and stating he was going to move out.

Wofford appeared downstairs crying before going into the bathroom and returning upstairs a short time later. Neither of the sisters knew why Wofford was upset, according to police.

“Christian and Elizabeth, who sleep in the living room which is directly below Kaycee and Paul’s room, fell asleep,” Fowler stated. “Elizabeth stated sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., she was woken by a loud thud. She heard Kaycee say ‘STOP,’ then everything got quiet.”

Elizabeth Rhodes told police she then fell back asleep.

Police arrested Chandler and read him his rights, after which he allegedly admitted to lying about the mystery intruder, according to the arrest warrant. Chandler stated he and Wofford watched a movie before falling asleep at around 1:00 a.m. and admitted that he and Wofford got into an argument earlier in the evening, though he claimed it never became physical. He went on to deny that he was ever physical with his girlfriend, “even when she has slapped him in the past.”

Chandler went on to say that Wofford died in the course of “rough sex.”

“Paul stated that after they talked, but before falling asleep, they engaged in what he considered ‘rough sex,’ which included Kaycee being on her back and him putting his hand on her throat and pushing down to impede her airway (choking) while having sex,” Fowler wrote in the affidavit. “Paul stated when they were done having sex, Kaycee had told him her throat hurts, but she had also said she loved him.”

Kaycee Wofford’s Facebook page lists her marital status as “engaged” to Chandler, with several posts with photos of the couple. Some include countdowns to Wofford’s due date.

Jail records show Chandler is being held at the Wichita County Jail on $1.5 million bond. He is charged with capital murder of multiple persons.

It isn’t the first time someone has cited “rough sex” as the reason for homicide. British Millionaire John Broadhurst said consensual rough sex was to blame for the 2016 death of 26-year-old receptionist Natalie Connolly, whom he left at the bottom of a staircase in a state of severe intoxication with severe internal injuries after a session. Broadhurst ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case.

Robert Chambers Jr. had also claimed his victim, Jennifer Levin, brought her strangulation murder upon herself because of her desire to have rough sex, styling himself as her victim despite evidence to the contrary.

The 18-year-old woman was found dead in Central Park in 1986 in a case that garnered national media attention and became known as “The Preppy Murder." Chambers eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case after the jury at his trial deliberated for nine days without rendering a verdict.
