Mathew Opoku Prempeh, NPP Member of Parliament for Manhyia, is considering taking legal action against the NDC General Secretary, Asiedu Nketia, for claiming that about 60 percent of persons elected during last year's district level elections were sympathisers of the NDC.
The NDC scribe made the comments at the just ended NDC Congress in Sunyani as an achievement under his stewardship.
The MP for Manhyia, who felt the NDC have breached the constitution by getting involved in purely non-partisan elections, raised the issue on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, but was directed by the Speaker of Parliament to seek redress in court.
Mr Opoku Prempeh was wondering what the NDC General Secretary meant when he revealed to delegates at the congress that the party’s faithfuls won about 60 per cent seats in the district assembly elections.
According to the NDC General Secretary, the results showed the overwhelming support Ghanaians have for the party and it’s Better Ghana Agenda adding that, “records show that our performance as a party is evident as the people elected in the assemblies are NDC sympathisers raised from between 85 percent in the Volta region to 38 percent in the Ashanti region."
“It is even more remarkable to note that in Eastern region, our sympathizers won more than 51 percent of the seats available. Overall, NDC sympathizers scored over 60 percent countrywide,” Asiedu Nketia also known as General Mosquito disclosed.
The Manhyia MP, however, said he was disappointed that, under the rule of an Associate Professor of Law, the country’s constitution is being so bastardized and subverted.
“That is an affront to our constitution,” he told Joy News.
Article 248 (1 and 2), he explained, indicates that party’s should not sponsor candidates at that level, adding, the NDC scribe violated the Constitution and went ahead to boast about it.
Asked if he will be heading to court as directed by the Speaker, Mathew Opoku Prempeh told Joy News that he would discuss the issue with the NPP leadership on the way forward before any further action will be taken.
