Controversy has erupted within the legal community in Kenya as a man claiming to be an advocate was exposed as an imposter.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), particularly its Nairobi branch, has sounded the alarm and cautioned the public about an individual impersonating an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
The individual in question goes by the name Brian Mwenda Njagi, who, according to LSK, is neither an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya nor a member of the society.
In a statement released on X, LSK Nairobi Branch stated, "The Branch wishes to notify all members of the society and the public that Brian Mwenda Njagi is not an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, from the Society’s records, neither is he a member of the Branch."
LSK Nairobi Branch has urged anyone with information about Mwenda or any other person impersonating an advocate to report it to the relevant authorities.
"Members are encouraged to share any information of any person masquerading as an Advocate for the necessary action," the statement added.
Eric Theuri, the President of LSK, confirmed that Brian Mwenda Njagi is not an advocate and stated that they have requested the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest him. "We have invited the DCI to track this person and arrest him for impersonation," Eric Theuri said.
Prominent lawyer Omwanza Ombati highlighted that Brian Mwenda Njagi managed to upload his image as the profile picture on an account belonging to another advocate who shares a similar name.
Ombati also expressed concerns about potential data breaches within the LSK Portal.
The news of Brian Mwenda's exploits took the X community by storm, with people sharing videos of his alleged courtroom appearances and other incidents.
In one video, he represents a high-profile client, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, displaying confidence and legal expertise that astonished many.
As the controversy unfolds, some netizens have drawn comparisons between Brian Mwenda and the character Mike Ross from the TV series "Suits." Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams, is known for his ability to practice law without a law degree.
Brian Mwenda's alleged successes have intrigued and bewildered many, with some claiming he has won 26 court cases. LSK has promised to investigate these claims.
Despite the ongoing investigation and legal actions, Brian Mwenda's audacious impersonation and apparent legal prowess have captivated many Kenyans, with some praising his resourcefulness.
His actions have also raised questions about the security of the LSK Portal and the potential for identity theft within the legal profession. The LSK said it is determined to address this issue decisively and protect the integrity of the legal profession.
