The story of Michael Kwabena Mensah, a robotics wunderkind from Achimota School, is nothing short of a script for a Netflix documentary.
Like many prodigies, his rise to the enviable title of “King of Robotics” in Ghana is an inspiring tale of wit and determination.
Michael’s mastery of robotics was on full display at the Annual Impact Round-table Discussion and Robotics Competition (AIRTAD 2025), where he cemented his reputation as a force to be reckoned with. As the driving force behind Achimota School’s robotics team, he brought his A-game in Lego robotics, leading his team to clinch the coveted trophy.
This victory not only brought immense pride to the Achimotan community but also solidified Michael’s place among Ghana’s robotics elite.
A Legacy Rooted in Achimota
Born on September 2, 2008, in Boulder, Colorado, USA, Michael hails from a lineage of proud Achimotans. His father, Edward K. Mensah, attended Achimota School, graduating in 1996 from Cadbury House. The torch was later passed to Michael’s elder brother, Gabriel Y. Mensah, who graduated in 2021 from Livingstone House.
Growing up, Michael was steeped in the rich legacy of Achimota School, two-time winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). So, when the time came to switch from Georgia to Ghana in 2023, the decision was an easy one.
Now, he dreams of continuing the family tradition by enrolling his future children in Achimota School.
Dominating AIRTAD 2025: The Game Changer
Michael’s fascination with robotics began early. At Flat Rock Middle School in Georgia, he joined the Robotics Club, sharpening his skills in AI and automation.
His role at AIRTAD 2025 was no accident—it was the culmination of years of curiosity, dedication, and mastery of AI and Industry 4.0 technologies.
When the Achimota team executed the theoretical aspects of the competition flawlessly, all eyes turned to Michael for the Lego segment. Rising to the occasion, he single-handedly carried the task, infusing it with his famed Midas touch.
His performance was the game-changer that upstaged all other competitors, earning him national and international recognition.
Life at Achimota: ‘The Achimota Dbee’
Affectionately nicknamed “Achimota dbee” by his peers, thanks to his polished manners, Michael has become a celebrated figure at Achimota, known for his academic brilliance and unwavering drive.
From the moment he stepped onto Achimota’s hallowed grounds in 2023, he envisioned himself among the school’s distinguished alumni, including Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry John Rawlings, John Atta Mills, and Sir Dawda Jawara.
Michael quickly established himself as a top performer, balancing his academic excellence with a deep passion for robotics. His love for Achimota was so profound that, despite having the opportunity to graduate high school in the U.S., he chose to stay in Ghana to lead his robotics team to victory at AIRTAD 2025.
In an interview, he credited Achimota’s support system for helping him settle in and adapt. He fully immersed himself in school activities, gaining a deeper appreciation of Ghanaian and African culture—an experience that peaked during Achimota’s 98th Founders’ Day celebrations on March 8, 2025.
Reflecting on his time at Lugard House, he described it as “destiny-changing,” teaching him valuable life skills like self-reliance and responsibility.
Beyond Achimota: A Future in Robotics
Michael’s vision is as expansive as his ambitions. With a deep-seated passion for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, he has set his sights on Computer Engineering at top-tier U.S. universities, including MIT, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, George Mason University and University of Virginia.
These institutions, known for their cutting-edge focus on AI and robotics, align perfectly with his aspirations.
Now, as 16-year-old Michael embarks on the next phase of his journey, he finds inspiration in the words of Achimota’s school hymn, “Gambaga to Accra”:
“When our books are laid aside, And we scatter far and wide, We remember with affection all we gained…”
As he steps into life as an Akora (an alumnus of Achimota School), Michael leaves with his name etched in gold in the annals of Achimota’s history. From his robotics triumphs to his unwavering dedication, he has truly lived up to the school’s legacy of excellence.
Michael Kwabena Mensah—the Robotics King of Achimota—has only just begun.
