Prof. Atta Mills has warned the EC and security personnel who would be deployed to supervise elections in December to be fair and prevent the stealing of the people's mandate. "The EC is a referee in the elections and I expect them to be fair in their activities, and to prevent one side of the teams involved from going on rampage," he said. The NDC flag-bearer was addressing party supporters at Ayanfuri, in the Upper Denyira West Constituency, in the Central Region during a campaign tour of the region. He said security men should be as neutral as possible by preventing the rigging of the elections, noting that "If Mills is your friend and you see him rigging, tell me that what I am doing is wrong”. Prof. Mills said Returning Officers must also be very fair in their dealings so as to prevent what occurred in 2004 where some Returning Officers deliberately declared results in favour of the ruling party, citing the Pru Constituency as an example. Prof. Mills said the NDC had vowed to make sure that the election was conducted in a free and fair atmosphere and impressed upon other parties to also take vows in that direction, to ensure that the decision of Ghanaian voters was respected. "I am not interested in taking power that is tainted with blood because if I wanted such a thing, I would have hit the streets in 2004 when the election was rigged, but all that I am saying is we should ensure fair elections," he stressed. He told supporters of the party to be vigilant at all the polling stations. The Law Professor said all the campaigning will be useless if they go to sleep and allow their opponents to rig the elections. He also advised people who attained 18 years and above to register when the voters' register opens, to enable them vote massively for the party. Prof. Mills started his campaign from Denkyira Asikuma in the Upper Denkyira East Constituency, traversing hills and valleys and preaching the message of economic, social and political hope to the people. At Diaso, the crowd was so thick that Prof. Mills predicted that the NDC has a bright chance in the coming elections. He promised to build a secondary school, rehabilitate roads and establish a Jewelry producing Institute in the district. He also promised to build a Training College at Dunkwa On Offm to train secondary school leavers in the area. At Kyekyewere, he promised to tar the road leading to the town and upgrade their medical facility to help give a face lift to the town. Prof. Mills promised to expand the Mosque at Sariki Zongo, after the Moslem community made a plea to the former vice President that their Mosque was too small to contain the growing Moslem population. Throughout the tour, Prof. Mill: said people vote for development and that they should shy away from politicians who will influence them with money to vote for them, explaining that because he had Ghanaians at heart, he would better the conditions of teachers, police and all Ghanaian workers.
