Mr. J.H. Owusu-Acheampong, National Campaign Manager of President Atta-Mills' bid to be re-elected flag-bearer of the ruling NDC, has said there are indications President Mills will win convincingly at the forth coming congress next month.
According to him, the overwhelming response accorded members of the campaign team of President Mills wherever they visited across the country indicated that “the congress at Sunyani would be a mere formality since President Mills will chalk up a resounding victory”.
Mr. Owusu-Acheampong, who said this in an interview in Accra, said the assurance by the delegates and other well-wishers of President Mills in the various constituencies has reinforced the belief of the campaign team that President Mills’ victory at the congress would be by a landslide.
He said delegates were very enthused about the level of maturity exhibited by President Mills in the face of wanton criticisms by leading personalities, especially those in the party.
“The campaign team is very happy about the positive perception the delegates have about President Mills and the desire by them to retain him as the presidential candidate of the party for the 2012 presidential elections,” he said.
He explained that the castigation President Mills had suffered at the hands of his opponents had won him even greater sympathy among the vast majority of the delegates.
Mr. Owusu- Acheampong, who is also a member of the Council of State, said the message of the campaign team had bordered on the humble, modest nature of President Mills and his achievements during his two-and-half years of managing the economy of the country.
“President Mills has always allowed his political maturity to prevail in the face of provocation by functionaries within the party and this has endeared him to the masses of the delegates,” he said.
The Council of State member said President Mills’ victory at the forthcoming congress was a foregone conclusion since he stood another chance of defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
