Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister has expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of a Premier league team from the Region.
He has therefore charged the Regional Sports Council to double up their efforts to establish a befitting football Club from the area.
The Minister expressed the dissatisfaction when he visited the Council as part of his familiarization tour to departments in the Region.
Mr Woyongo noted that the Region had many talented young footballers and had over the years produced many sportsmen and women for Premier clubs and mentioned Abedi Pele as an indigene of the area who rose to become one of the best Ghanaian Footballers.
“There are a lot of talented footballers in the Region but they are splinter ones and need to be encouraged to come together to form a formidable Premier team in the Region”, he stressed.
He told management of the Sports Council to be innovative by looking for sponsorships and said there were some businesses that had interest in sports with the decision to promote their business and asked them to explore such opportunities.
Mr Woyongo urged the Management of the Sports Council to develop a comprehensive proposal and submit it to the Regional Coordinating Council to look for sponsorship packages to enable them succeed in tapping the budding talents in the area.
He assured them that the Municipal and District Assemblies would also be made to contribute to sporting events in the Region, adding that Government attaches more importance to sports since a healthy person can contribute much to productivity.
The Regional Minister asked the coaches to redouble their efforts so as to help nurture a lot of talents of the youth of the Region to get a football Club to participate in the Premier league and said the RCC would do all it can to assist towards the development of sports in the Region.
