The Ministry of Health on Friday congratulated Dr Ken Sagoe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), for being honoured by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) with its highest award, Fellow of the GMA.
He was honoured for his significant contributions to the association and the medical profession both locally and internationally including his active participation in the development and implementation of policies relating to human resource development in the health sector.
A statement signed by Mr Dan Osman Mwin, Head of Public Relations of the Ministry, said the Ministry could bear testimony to Dr Sagoe’s many successes since his appointment in the face of several challenges.
It said among the successes were his transformation of the hospital into a tertiary facility to serve as a training ground for medical students from the University for Development Studies (UDS).
Dr Sagoe helped in obtaining provisional accreditation for the hospital to receive and train residents from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and able to attract more health professionals into the facility, as the number of doctors increased from 24 as of 2008 to 107 by the end of 2010, including 20 specialists.
“Under his able leadership, the hospital has expanded its scope of operations in line with its mandate as a teaching hospital and now offers clinical services in endoscopy, dialysis, neurology and orthopaedics. It also has fully functional neo-natal and general Intensive Care Units (ICUs), the statement said.
It said the Ministry was proud to be associated with Dr Sagoe for his immense contribution towards health delivery in Tamale in particular and the country in general and urged medical doctors and other health professionals to emulate his shinning professional and leadership qualities.
