A member of the Energy and Mines Committee of Parliament has vowed to ensure the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) complies with parliament’s directive over its expenditure items for 2016.
Isaac Kwame Asiamah said this has become necessary because the corporation has on several occasions failed to comply with documents it presented to Parliament.
Parliament of Ghana in approving GNPC’s work plan for 2016 asked the corporation to furnish the House with details covering its 115 million cedis budget to put up a new headquarters as well as its 100 million dollars guarantee to private power generating company Karpower.
The corporation was given the June 17 to comply with the directive.
Speaking to Joy News on the issue, Mr Asiamah who is also the Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua Constituency in the Ashanti Region said the directive is aimed at refocusing the GNPC on its core mandate.
“They have deviated from their core mandates,” he said adding for some time now GNPC has been concentrating on salt and ginger instead of looking for oil.
“They were doing all sort of bad investments that is why all these years oil eluded Ghana,” he said.
According to him, the current 350, 000 oil production per a day in the country is minimal compared to the potential of the country.
He believes the nation has the potential to produce more than two million barrels of oil a day if GNPC will concentrate on producing more oil.
“We can do that in Ghana here,” he said because “The potential is there.”
“Voltarian basin has a big land about 48 percent of the land mass all filled with oil,” he added.
