The Coalition of Muslim Organisations (COMOG), the umbrella body for Muslims in Ghana, has initiated steps to codify the selection of a Chief Imam.
The National Executive of the Coalition believe codifying the processes leading to the selection of a National Chief Imam was urgently necessary to forestall any future problems.
Currently there is no laid down documented procedure and process by which a National Chief Imam and other Muslim leaders are selected in Ghana, something which is a source of anxiety amongst Muslims.
In view of this, COMOG in consultation with the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osumanu Nuhu Sharubutu, proposed the setting up of an Islamic Leadership Framework Committee to advise on “a framework that will serve as a basis for choosing imams and other personalities who will lead the smooth administration of Muslim affairs.”
The Framework, according to the proposal, is expected to determine “the choice of spiritual leaders and administration of mosques/spiritual centres at community/district, regional and national levels to be ratified at a conference of Islamic stakeholders in Ghana.”
The General Secretary of COMOG who doubles as the Coordinator of the Committee, Hajj Abdel-Manan Abdel Rahman said recent developments in the Muslim community made it imperative to take the steps being taken.
He said the peaceful co-existence between various sects of Muslims and non-Muslims ought not be taken for granted.
“It is absolutely necessary to lay out in clear terms what the parameters and processes are for choosing our leaders so that there is no doubt in anybody’s mind,” he said.
He said the muted furore that followed a recent proposal for the selection of a Greater Accra Imam is indicative of the kinds of problems that can arise if the matter is not tackled urgently.
Hajj Abdel Rahman said the members of the Committee were carefully chosen from all spheres of the Muslim community and is made up of men and women of proven integrity.
He is confident the Committee will produce a framework that will stand the test of time.
He said the Muslim community was making giant strides in building the communities, citing the recent of a COMOG Magazine to tell the story of Muslims.
He believes gradually Muslims are tackling their problems one after another.
