Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says he did not breach national security protocols by sharing a $20 million transfer from Bank of Ghana to the Central Bank of Liberia.
Earlier in the day, Mr Ablakwa took to social media platform X, to highlight that an amount of $20 million was cleared by officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and was intended for the Central Bank of Liberia.
He noted that while documents addressed to the GRA indicate that the money was sent to the Bank of Ghana for safekeeping before being transferred to Liberia, records from Ghana's central bank suggest a different narrative.
After the publication, the BoG issued a statement describing the legislator's actions as "unfortunate" and raised significant security concerns, potentially compromising sensitive financial information.
The central bank clarified that the $20 million was transferred to its account as part of an established arrangement with the Central Bank of Liberia.
But speaking on JoyFM's Newsnight, Mr Ablakwa said he has not breached any security details.
He stressed that he was only playing his role as a legislator and holding those in authority accountable for their actions.
“It is part of our work to as Member of Parliament to carry out oversight to let all institutions know that we are on top of our job. We are watching, we are keenly monitoring and we are carrying out oversight,” he said.
The legislator said he posted the issue on social media only to get clarity on the matter and there was no other intention.
Regarding the issue of posting flight details, he said the flight details was in the documents in shared and was a “clearly an oversight.”
“They put out those details their document. In my write up I didn’t put out any flight details and there has been no flight details as and when that re-exportation will be carried out.
“We are carrying out our mandate, it is pure oversight and I do not see the national security breach in this matter,” he added.
He insists that the said amount was safe and not been stolen so he does not understand the national security concerns.
Mr Ablakwa stressed that there has been increased incident of money laundering and was only playing his role at MP.
Meanwhile, he said the explanations offered by the BoG and the Liberian government was satisfactory.
