Independent presidential candidate, Nana Kwame Bediako has vowed to tackle the mass migration of healthcare professionals, including nurses and midwives, through his industrialisation agenda and an overhaul of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
Speaking to the trainees at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Hohoe, Volta Region, Mr Bediako outlined plans to provide more job opportunities and improve the incomes of health workers across the country.
During his visit, he urged the trainees to strive for excellence, emphasising the importance of their role in Ghana’s healthcare future.
"I want you to become great leaders of this country so that we will no longer seek health aid from other countries and build our own hospitals here in Ghana," he said, calling on them to remain in the country and contribute to its development.
The exodus of healthcare professionals seeking better prospects abroad has been a longstanding issue in Ghana, exacerbated by low salaries and poor working conditions.
Recent reports indicate that around 6,000 nurses left the country in search of better opportunities overseas.
He attributed this trend to the lack of effective policies designed to retain healthcare workers and stressed that under his leadership, Ghana would be a more attractive place for professionals to stay and thrive.
“I am here to advocate for you women,” Mr Bediako said. “I want you to become entrepreneurs, I want you to become leaders, not just wives or people who cook for us. I want you to share positions with us.”
Mr Bediako called on the nursing trainees to support him in the upcoming elections, promising that, if elected, he would work to make their aspirations a reality and address the healthcare sector's challenges. he concluded
