It’s a cloudy Saturday morning here at the Sunyani Coronation Park, venue for the much heralded National Delegates Congress of the National Democratic Congress.
It is the day the future of the party will be determined as delegates will decide which of the two colossi in the party - President John Mills and ex-First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings will be elected as the leader and flag-bearer of the party.
Yesterday, aides and spokespersons of the two combatants in a last gasp attempt talked up the chances of their candidates and their supporters have taken a cue this morning.
Despite some drizzles, footsoldiers and party supporters have crammed the venue in full regalia and in absolute party mood. They are dancing, honking, singing, waiting for the business of the day to start.
Security is more than visible and maybe intimidating, at least for those who have intentions other than legal.
Organisers of the Congress say the sitting president and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings will sit on one side of the dais with the former president John Rawlings and the Vice President John Mahama sitting on the other side.
All of them are expected to address Congress before the voting starts.
Party officials say Congress will open at 10am by which time they expect all to have been seated, and by 12pm those billed to address the gathering - Party Chairman, General Secretary, President John Mills as Party Leader, and Founder Jerry Rawlings. Another session will see "candidates" Mills and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings make final submissions to delegates.
Hopefully voting should begin at 12pm.
Myjoyonline.com will bring you live updates of the congress as well as a comprehensive coverage of events.
